Transportation group seeks partnership with Selma for scholarship 5K and community events

Troy Casy, president of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials’ North Carolina chapter, and Casey Felder Jr. asked the Town of Selma on June 4 to partner on an inaugural 5K event in spring 2027 to raise money for CompTO North Carolina scholarship initiatives and highlight Selma’s rail heritage. Casy said the group hopes to bring participants from Johnson County, the Raleigh area and beyond and described the event as a “friends and family walk run 5K” with options for walkers and runners.
“The idea is when we partner with you guys, we in CompT 100% of those um the benefits of the earnings would go to CompT North Carolina scholarship initiatives for the students across the region,” Casy said, describing scholarship funding as the primary use of proceeds.
Council members said the request arrives at an opportune time because the town is reviewing its event sponsorship and partnership policy. Mayor McAllister and staff noted the town already manages several runs and festivals — examples mentioned included a polar bear run and the Sel Railroad Days 5K — and said they will work to align naming, beneficiary designation and the town’s marketing and legal requirements for use of the town name and logo.
Council staff said the town will coordinate timing with the annual events calendar and legal will draft or review any partnership agreement to spell out logistics, marketing, and reporting requirements. CompTO representatives said they would be available to help plan and that the organization aims to recruit transportation professionals, students and community members to the event.
Next steps: CompTO and town staff will follow up as the town finalizes its 2027 event calendar and event-sponsorship policy; no formal agreement was approved at the June 4 meeting.
