Lorain County rejects tentative deputies’ agreement, seeks fiscal detail before resuming talks

The Lorain County Board of Commissioners voted June 5 to reject the tentative collective-bargaining agreement (CBA) submitted by the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office for the deputies’ unit and asked for additional supporting documentation and cost projections before reconsidering approval.
The board said the decision was not made lightly but was necessary because commissioners had not been included in negotiations and the package lacked the detailed fiscal analyses the county normally receives with CBAs. A staff statement read for the record said past submissions included cost projections, summaries of proposed changes and supporting detail; the packet before the board did not include comparable documentation.
Commissioners said the action was intended to reopen communications and ensure any final agreement is fiscally responsible and sustainable for county operations and taxpayers. County representatives plan to engage the sheriff’s office to address outstanding questions.
What happens next: representatives of the board will communicate with the sheriff’s office to obtain the missing documentation and to re-enter discussions. The board said, out of respect for the collective-bargaining process, it would not provide further public comment at this time.
