Local nonprofits and groups thank borough for grants; assembly proclaims heritage and awareness observances

At the June 4 Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meeting several nonprofit and community representatives thanked the borough for recent grants and education funding and outlined community programming supported by that funding.

Linda Lance, president of the Humane Society of Kodiak, reported the nonprofit’s long-standing contract to operate the Kodiak Animal Shelter and said the borough’s $5,000 nonprofit grant helped sterilize 22 pets this fiscal year (total cost reported $6,688); she noted the organization provides vaccinations, microchipping and spay/neuter programs for both city and borough residents.

Julie Matwyu of the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center described workforce-development programming supported by borough nonprofit-education funds: the center has trained about 112 people in marine-safety instruction and roughly 85 people in seafood-program trainings over recent years and offered to provide a comprehensive report to the assembly.

Noan Pector of the Kodiak Soil and Water Conservation District urged stronger partnership on invasive-species prevention and asked the borough to recognize June 14–20, 2026 as Kodiak Invasive Species Awareness Week.

The assembly issued three proclamations: June as Filipino American Heritage Month (accepted by Mark Bisco of the Filipino American Association of Kodiak), June as Men’s Health Month, and June as Pride Month. A community representative accepted the Pride Month proclamation and shared personal remarks about gratitude for borough support.

These public-comment presentations underscored local nonprofit reliance on borough grant funding for service delivery and community programming.
