Resident raises concerns about Route 33 development, contaminated fill and oversight; township says site is inspected

At the June 3 council meeting, resident George Gunkelman urged township officials to take a closer look at a development site on Route 33, saying the morning flow of dump trucks and the apparent absence of manifests and tested fill raised the risk the site could receive contaminated material.
"It's my impression that none of that exists here," Gunkelman said of manifests and tested sources, and he reminded the council of a prior episode in which contaminated fill from a Ford plant had been placed in the township.
Township staff responded that the site has an approved plan and is being inspected, and that documentation certifying the material as clean had been submitted. Planning staff emphasized that applicants must meet permitted‑use requirements in the applicable zone and that inspections and manifests are part of the process.
Gunkelman also expressed frustration about utility relocations tied to JCP&L work at a county intersection and urged the township to press the utility company to speed pole relocations because he said the county inspector did not expect the intersection to be done this calendar year.
Officials said they would follow up and reiterated that planning board approvals and inspections are in place for the project.
