Broward County revises pet-registration fees; microchipped animals qualify for lower rates, county offers free clinics

Doug Brightwell of Broward County Animal Care briefed the council on recent changes to the county’s pet‑registration ordinance and the registration fee structure.
Brightwell said the county moved away from basing tag pricing on sterilization status and instead uses microchip status to determine a reduced fee tier. He described a new fee table: a one‑year microchipped tag is $25 and a three‑year microchipped tag is $65; non‑microchipped one‑year tags are $55 and non‑microchipped three‑year tags are $145. The county also expanded free clinics twice a month that provide rabies vaccinations and free microchipping to help owners access the lower rate.
Brightwell said Broward County Animal Care took in more than 9,000 dogs and cats last year and that return‑to‑owner rates have improved (reported to about 15 percent). He urged residents to microchip and register pets to increase reunification and reduce shelter stays.
Council members thanked the county for its cooperation and noted that Davie fire stations participated in a microchip‑scanner distribution earlier in the year.
