Kari Wissel, director of development for YMCA East Central Indiana, presented to the Jay County Commissioners on May 26, 2026, to describe the YMCA’s service footprint and a planned renovation of Garfield Elementary School.
Wissel told commissioners that while the YMCA is based in downtown Muncie it serves all of District 6 and that 17% of its participants in 2025 were from Jay County. She said the YMCA recently acquired Garfield Elementary School and has launched a capital campaign to renovate the building for YMCA programs and community use. Wissel asked commissioners to help connect county residents with YMCA programs and services as the fundraising and renovation effort proceeds.
Commissioners did not take formal action on the YMCA presentation during the meeting. The request was recorded as an informational presentation with the organization seeking county assistance in outreach and resident connections.
