Clayton City Council on June 4 approved Ordinance 062609 to amend designated job categories and pay schedules for part-time fire and EMS personnel.
The chief briefed council that the city has experienced recent vacancies among part-time fire/EMS staff and that the existing pay scale had not been reviewed for about four years. The chief said market review showed the city was below the regional midpoint and recommended moving to roughly the 75th percentile to be competitive and ease staffing shortages; he told council the change is "within the budget" and would not require a 2026 budget amendment.
Council moved and seconded the ordinance and it passed by voice vote. Council members noted that unfilled positions can drive overtime costs and the pay adjustment is intended to reduce that pressure.
Next steps: Human Resources and the Fire Department will implement the revised pay schedule. Council can expect follow-up on recruitment metrics and overtime impact.
