The Solano County Board of Supervisors on June 2 adopted a resolution commending Mare Island Technology Academy’s mock trial team for achievements in the 2025–26 season, including multiple judge decisions, individual MVP honors and advancement to the California state mock trial finals.
The resolution notes that MIT established its mock trial team in 2023 and that the program supports public speaking, leadership, legal reasoning and civic engagement. "Participation in mock trial cultivates and strengthens student skills in public speaking, leadership, legal reasoning, civic engagement, critical thinking, teamwork, and courtroom procedure," the resolution reads.
Volunteer judges and legal mentors were singled out during remarks. "Judge Kelly Trujillo, Judge Marlo Nesperos, and Judge Dan Healey have had the pleasure and opportunity to work with these students for the last two years," Judge Kelly Trujillo said, praising students for their talent and dedication.
Christopher Jacob, a Vallejo city attorney and MIT alumnus, and parent volunteer Shannon Luhan described the program as a civic and educational asset that levels the playing field for students facing better‑resourced opponents. "Despite knowing that they will compete with better resourced schools, they come prepared," Jacob said.
The board presented certificates and thanked coaches and courts that opened facilities for Saturday practice; the resolution was approved on the consent agenda. No new county funding for the program was recorded in the meeting minutes.
