Students describe ‘tasting flight’ after Danville aviation program sends seven on discovery flights

Danville Public Schools highlighted a student aviation experience April 16 that district leaders said expands career pathways and connects classroom learning to real‑world skills. Dr. Stone introduced the presentation and said seven students participated in discovery flights through a partnership with Averett University.
Aviation instructor Celia Garcia described the flights as unforgettable and said participation strengthens student motivation for careers in piloting, aerospace engineering and aviation maintenance. Student Trayvon Barnes told the board the experience confirmed his desire to pursue aviation as a career and thanked the district for funding the program.
Dr. Stone said the program also exposes middle school students through an exploration program and that Danville will continue to grow the initiative. The board received the presentation and had no follow‑up questions.
