Council authorizes property acquisition for sewer project and to pursue regional SS4A grant collaborations

At its May 4 meeting, the Lexington Town Council approved two infrastructure-related items: authorization to acquire property rights for the S5314 Mile Creek gravity sewer project, including the initiation of condemnation proceedings if negotiations are unsuccessful, and authorization for staff to collaborate with Lexington County and nearby municipalities on future SS4A (Safe Streets and Roads for All) grant applications.
Council instructions for the sewer project resolution direct staff to obtain appraisals and make good-faith offers before initiating condemnation under South Carolina law if necessary. The resolution authorizes the mayor or town administrator to execute documents to effectuate acquisitions needed for public infrastructure improvements.
The SS4A collaboration item followed a prior denial of an FHWA implementation grant; FHWA recommended a stronger collaborative approach for competitiveness. Council approved pursuing partnerships to strengthen future applications.
Both measures passed unanimously. Staff said they will proceed with appraisals and negotiations for property needed for the sewer project and begin intergovernmental discussions to prepare a joint SS4A funding application.
