Mark Perryman, CEO of Norfolk International Airport, joined museum representatives and local officials to unveil Kids' Port, a new children's play area at Norfolk International Airport.
The ceremony emphasized the partnership between the airport and the Children's Museum of Virginia, which the speakers noted is located in the City of Portsmouth. "We are excited for this partnership," Perryman said, describing the exhibit as a way to "showcase what the region has to offer" and to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia, the airport and the City of Portsmouth.
The mayor, speaking at the ribbon-cutting, thanked organizers and airport staff and said the installation gives families "something to look forward to" when children visit the airport. A museum representative thanked the cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk, Norfolk International Airport and the Portsmouth Museums Foundation for making the exhibit possible and said the installation brings "a little piece of Portsmouth in Norfolk." The representative also praised Taylor, who designed the exhibit panels, and invited attendees to explore the space and take photos with Andelo, the museum mascot.
Organizers described the play area as part of the airport's arts and entertainment program, which the airport said includes museum cases and regular live performances. Speakers encouraged families to try the exhibit's play plane and to visit the Children's Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth for further learning-through-play experiences.
The ceremony consisted of opening remarks, a ceremonial ribbon cut by the mayor and city manager, brief remarks from airport and museum representatives, and an invitation for attendees to explore the exhibit. Details about funding or operating agreements for the installation were not specified during the event.
The dedication concluded with an invitation to the public to use the Kids' Port play area and with organizers stressing the exhibit's role in promoting regional attractions for families and young travelers.
