The Tempe Elementary School District governing board voted on May 20 to adopt chapters 1 through 5 of a trust-model policy package that will guide district procedures in the coming school year. The board approved the package by voice vote after staff summarized changes and answered questions.
Dr. Robert Driscoll, the district superintendent, framed the vote as the culmination of several study sessions and rounds of board feedback. “We’re at this point now because earlier this school year the board voted to adopt model trust policies and you have gone through each chapter, analyzing them, giving feedback, and now you’re at the point of culmination where you have them all together,” Driscoll said.
Board members asked staff to clarify leave provisions in Chapter 4. Mr. Buckley of human resources described substantive edits: streamlining several leave options, removing an unenforceable requirement related to return-to-work, providing parental/paternity leave days up front (rather than issuing them retroactively), and eliminating sabbatical leave because it has seen almost no use. “Those days go upfront to parents at this time,” Mr. Buckley said, explaining the district’s intent to give employees leave when they most need it rather than backfilling after the fact.
The staff package was vetted through the district’s IBN review and by legal counsel, Mr. Buckley said. Following the explanation and a brief opportunity for last questions, a board member moved to adopt chapters 1–5 as modified; the board approved the motion by voice vote and the chair declared the motion passed.
The policy adoption is administrative and sets district-level practices; no specific budgetary changes were recorded during the vote. After the policy action the meeting proceeded with routine reports and announcements, including staff reminders about benefits enrollment and wellness programs.
