Town staff provided a progress update on the Nags Head beach nourishment project on June 3, reporting that contractors have placed approximately 427,000 cubic yards of sand to date — about 17% of the total project volume — and that weather and sea conditions have periodically paused operations.
Public‑works staff said the cutterhead dredge RS Weeks began pumping May 19 but temporarily pulled off during rough conditions and anchor‑support issues; a hopper dredge, RB Weeks, arrived May 25 and has been operating from a subline located just south of the Nags Head Pier. Where the cutterhead could not safely operate in higher seas, the hopper dredge provided additional pumping resiliency.
Staff described the project map and noted completed green sections of the beachfill, active construction closure zones and pedestrian corridor staging to minimize public safety impacts while equipment is staged. “To date approximately 427,000 cubic yards have been filled on the beach which represents about 17% of the overall volume,” the project update states on the record.
Staff said they will receive an updated schedule from the contractor at the regular weekly project meeting to estimate how the recent weather interruptions affect the completion timeline; previously the contractor indicated a beginning to mid‑July target for completion prior to recent pauses.
