West Palm Beach CRA to expand cleanups, deploy mobile CCTV after Northwest safety concerns

Resident Darren Studsdale told the Community Redevelopment Agency the newly engaged Northwest security company has “made a huge difference,” but warned of a recent incident in which about 10 people were checking car doors along 3rd Street and near the Grand. He urged coordinated action, proposed a standing Northwest security task committee, and said neighborhood cleanups — which he has organized for 15–20 years — remain vital to sustaining the area.

Commissioner Warren thanked volunteers and said blight requires proactive, not just case‑by‑case, responses. Chris Ruge, CRA staff, told the board cleanups are currently dispatched when staff recognize illegal dumping or excessive trash but that staff will present a plan during the August budget cycle to create a dedicated cleanup team and add pressure‑washing services. Ruge said the regular program is expected to begin October 1.

Commissioner Fox clarified the city’s current 'green team' is run under the Downtown Development Authority and has set boundaries, and she said the CRA has discussed adding the service to its budget. Security manager Carlos Rodriguez said the permanent camera program is currently intended for commercial businesses and is not yet developed for primarily residential buildings because of privacy concerns; staff said a residential camera policy is still forthcoming. Rodriguez added that four portable CCTV trailer units are ready for deployment and staff will coordinate with police to place at least one mobile unit on 3rd Street as a temporary deterrent.

The board did not vote on a formal policy change at the meeting but directed staff to bring the described cleanup and camera proposals to the budget and committees for follow up.
