Bonita Springs authorizes participation in national opioid settlement process

The Bonita Springs City Council approved a motion authorizing the city to participate in a national round of proposed opioid settlements being administered through state and national claims processes and an interlocal agreement with Lee County.
City Attorney Derek summarized that the Florida attorney general negotiated earlier settlements and that a new round of proposed settlements and defendants has circulated nationally. He said the city has a deadline to opt in and that the process would route funds to county‑level programs and nonprofit partners rather than creating a separate city program; examples include support for drug courts and treatment initiatives.
"Money comes in our allocation... will go into a bigger pot which gets matched by additional state funds and then doled out to programs like the county LCSO drug court and nonprofits," Derek said. Council discussed allowable uses (rehab and related services) and the city manager's delegated authority to sign participation documents.
A motion to authorize participation passed on roll call.
