Weddington council member raises idea of shared lobbyist for western-county towns

Council member Jeff Perryman told the Weddington Town Council that the Western Union Municipal Alliance (WUMA) is exploring whether several neighboring municipalities should jointly retain a lobbyist in Raleigh.
Perryman told the council that Waxaw (as spoken in the meeting), Weddington, Wesley Chapel, Stallings, Mineral Springs and Marvin make up six western-county municipalities in WUMA and that a lobbyist who regularly reports to the group might help them learn about proposed state zoning legislation earlier and coordinate questions to county and state representatives. He said the lobbyist planned to attend WUMA’s Nov. 20 meeting to explain her services.
Perryman framed the idea as a way for small municipalities to be proactive rather than react after legislation is already drafted and debated in Raleigh. He encouraged interested council members and residents to attend the Nov. 20 meeting to hear the lobbyist’s presentation and evaluate whether a shared arrangement and the necessary legal agreements would be appropriate for the group.
