Weddington council moves April public hearing to high school and delays Toll Brothers vote to May

WEDDINGTON — The Weddington Town Council voted unanimously to amend its calendar and hold the April 14 meeting at Weddington High School for public comment only, then voted 3to2 to postpone formal consideration and any vote on the Toll Brothers conditional-zoning application until the next regularly scheduled council meeting.
A councilmember who initiated the venue discussion said the high-school hearing would allow more residents to speak. “We cannot do that here … We need to do it at the high school,” the councilmember said, adding that council business itself should remain at town hall. The council unanimously approved the calendar amendment to move the April 14 public-hearing venue to Weddington High School.
Town Attorney (role) told the council the high-school auditorium lacks the technical resources and layout necessary for full negotiation, clear presentations and official minutes. “You all would get a better business meeting on that topic here at town hall than you would at the high school,” the attorney said, recommending the council limit the high-school night to public comment and avoid voting there.
Councilmembers clarified that if developer Toll Brothers is ready to present, April 14 at the high school will be used only for the public hearing and no formal votes would be taken that night. If Toll Brothers is not ready, the public hearing will be cancelled and any vote would occur later at town hall.
On a separate motion, a councilmember moved to delay discussion and consideration of the Toll Brothers conditional-zoning application until no sooner than the next regularly scheduled meeting. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Darcy and passed 3to2, with Councilmember Tom counted among those supporting the postponement. The council did not take any zoning action at the meeting.
Staff said the calendar change and the notice that no vote will be taken on April 14 will be posted on the town website. The council directed staff to notify the public that the April 14 date at Weddington High School is a hearing-only event and that any formal town-business votes will be conducted at town hall.
The council adjourned after completing the calendar change and scheduling discussion; the record will reflect the councildecision to limit the high-school session to public comment and to delay the zoning vote until the May meeting if the developer is not ready.
