McLeod County approves fairground acoustics, stormwater design, road surfacing award and surplus sales

Fairgrounds acoustics: Building‑maintenance staff asked the board to award a contract to Wood Acoustics (Alexandria) to install acoustic panels in Sentry Hall at the McLeod County Fairgrounds for $32,400 from the designated capital asset budget (257). Staff and several commissioners described the installation as a practical, low‑maintenance first step to reduce echoing for multi‑use events; the board approved the contract by voice vote.
Stormwater resiliency design: The board authorized Short Elliott Hendrickson, Inc. (Hutchinson) for design of the Southwest stormwater resiliency project at a cost not to exceed $85,200, with design funds split evenly with the city of Hutchinson under a joint powers agreement. Public Works explained the project will redevelop a pond at the southeast corner of the fairgrounds, create a regional pond east of the fairgrounds and divert ditch flow to improve upstream flooding and water treatment.
Road surfacing award: The board awarded county project 260000009 (aggregate surfacing) to Maker Wash Sand and Gravel Inc. (Darwin, MN) for $292,543, including the base bid and selected alternates; the county will haul approximately 9,600 tons from the pit for shoulder surfacing and use other alternates for delivery and stockpiling. Commissioners asked about delivery timing and use of shoulder equipment; Public Works provided operational details.
Surplus equipment: The board approved use of GovDeals.com to auction a 1999 Kawasaki Mule and a 2010 John Deere Gator as surplus; staff said GovDeals avoids seller premiums and the city of Hutchinson has used the service successfully.
Elevator update: Building maintenance gave a construction update on the courthouse elevator shaft, noting a change order for an additional beam within contingency and that the metal door casement is on order before final assembly.
Next steps: Staff will finalize contracts, schedule work to avoid fair conflicts, and proceed with procurement and project coordination with the city of Hutchinson and vendors.
