Board approves sewer-line repair contract after inspection finds corroded cast-iron pipe

Public Buildings Director Dwayne Stanley told the Board on March 2 that Todd Brothers Plumbing used a camera inspection and located a corroded 20-foot section of cast-iron sewer pipe beneath a load-bearing wall serving the lower-level men’s restroom at the Yadkin County Agricultural & Educational Building. Stanley said the corroded bottom of the pipe allowed sewage to collect in the line and was causing a sewer odor to migrate through the plumbing system.

Commissioner Cliff Collins asked whether additional quotes could be obtained; staff said other vendors could perform their own assessments but explained the county contracted with Todd Brothers after that firm performed the inspection identifying the problem. Dwayne Stanley said Hughes Plumbing might be able to perform repairs and that other vendors typically want to verify conditions before issuing quotes. The Todd Brothers contract includes work to remove and later replace part of the flooring and to pay necessary subcontractors for that work.

Commissioner Tim Parks moved to approve the Todd Brothers Plumbing contract and Vice Chairman Frank Zachary seconded the motion; the Board approved the contract 4-1 with Commissioner Collins opposed. The Board previously considered a motion to table to obtain additional free quotes but that motion failed for lack of a second.
