BPW awards contract to reroute fire service at 201 W. Washington, approves $15,000 owner cost-share

The Zeeland Board of Public Works on April 14 awarded contract work for the rerouting and replacement of the fire service at 201 W. Washington Ave., a project initiated after a 2025 traffic accident damaged a hydrant and revealed an aging water main installed in the late 1950s.
Water Operations Manager Jason Postma described the scope: reroute the fire service from Washington Avenue to the north side of the premises, abandon about 240 feet of 8-inch water main from the 1950s, reconfigure piping to serve a hydrant at W. McKinley Ave. and N. Colonial St., and coordinate construction with the City’s Colonial Street resurfacing project. The project estimate presented to the Board was $130,598.08, including engineering, construction inspection, a $15,000 owner cost-share for backflow prevention, and contingency.
The Board awarded the underground construction work to Rieth-Riley Construction (motion by Commissioner Query, seconded by Commissioner Walters) for $115,598.08, and separately approved a $15,000 cost-share to the building owner for new backflow prevention; both motions carried unanimously.
The city previously approved the project at its March 16, 2026 meeting pending BPW approval. Staff noted Dan Hoe Excavating, Inc. will complete the underground construction portion of the work as a subcontractor. Implementation will align with the City’s resurfacing schedule on Colonial Street.
