Atlantic Beach approves Sherry Drive water main extension; 75% reimbursable via Department of Defense grant

The Atlantic Beach City Commission approved a contract Feb. 23 to extend the water main on Sherry Drive, awarding the Sherry Drive Water Main Extension Phase 2 project to American Civil Construction Inc. for $851,187.85.
Interim City Manager Kevin Hogancamp said the extension strengthens potable water delivery and fire protection for properties on the northeast corner of Wonderwood and Mayport and provides redundancy to support NAS Mayport. He told commissioners that approximately 75% of the project cost will be reimbursed through a Defense Community Infrastructure Grant from the Department of Defense, reducing the city’s net share of the cost.
Commissioners emphasized the public‑safety benefits. City Engineer Steve Swan’s involvement and coordination with staff helped secure the grant and advance the project to bid, Hogancamp said during the presentation.
The commission voted to approve the resolution and award the bid; the contract authorization directs the city manager to execute the necessary contracts and purchase orders. Staff said work will include tying the new main into existing infrastructure up to the base security gate and improving fire flows for nearby institutions including the Anchor Academy and planned developments along Mayport Road.
