At the April 13 meeting the Atlantic Beach City Commission recognized three police volunteers — James Johnson (over 2,600 hours), Joni Line (over 1,000 hours) and Joe Esparza (about 1,500 hours) — for their sustained service to the police department and the community.
Police Chief Vic Galila described the volunteer program and described the honorees uties, which include CPR/AED and Stop-the-Bleed training, event coordination, and school-crossing-guard support. Mayor and commissioners thanked the volunteers for their years of service.
Separately during a courtesy item, Mayor Ford read a hand-delivered letter from Mayport Middle School students asking that pickleball be allowed at Jack Russell Park and that signage be posted. City Manager Hogancamp, who said he plays both tennis and pickleball, confirmed that pickleball is allowed on tennis courts and that staff will place a sign on the park bulletin board explaining that pickleball is permitted; he cautioned against new striping.
The city asked students and residents to report future incidents to the city manager—or intervention so staff can follow up.
