Brown County commissioners approve $1,652.80 in advance reimbursements for fire response, clear event permits and schedule outreach

Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Roberts told the board that Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursement could take several months and asked the county to pay expenses for local partners in the meantime. He asked the county to reimburse the City of Hiawatha $1,240, the Robinson Fire Department $100 and the Everest Fire Department $312.80. Commissioner Lucas Heinen moved to approve advancing those payments from the Emergency Management budget; Commissioner Richard Tesoriero seconded and the motion carried. The county expects to seek reimbursement from FEMA for the amounts advanced.
The board recognized Roberts after reading a letter from Robinson Mayor Kelly Griswold commending Roberts for coordinating resources and contacting the American Red Cross to assist a family after a May 15, 2026 house fire.
In routine business, the commissioners approved the May 29, 2026 minutes on a motion by Commissioner Richard Tesoriero, seconded by Commissioner William Pollock. The board approved a Property Use Agreement from the Hiawatha Lions Club to use the northeast corner of the courthouse square for a Cruise Night on June 27, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Commissioner Pollock moved to approve and Commissioner Tesoriero seconded.
Commissioners also voted to hold an informal public outreach meeting, "Coffee with the Commissioners," on June 25, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bruning Barn.
The board recessed into brief executive sessions to discuss compensation of non-elected personnel, citing protection of employee privacy. An initial 10-minute executive session began at 1:23 p.m., was extended by five minutes, and concluded with no action taken. A separate three-minute executive session at 1:49 p.m. also ended with no action.
Commissioner Tesoriero reported that the first 40 spots for the Patriotic Banner Project have been filled and asked I.T. Director Dallas Johnson to update contact information for the project's second phase.
Commissioner Tesoriero moved to adjourn at 1:53 p.m.; Commissioner Pollock seconded and the motion carried. The board set its next regular meeting for Monday, June 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
