Star Island manager briefs HDC on repair plan for founder's building

Jack Farrell, Star Island Manager & Facilities Director, phoned into the Historic District Commission meeting on Jan. 14 to review a proposed repair project for the founder's building located near the waterfront.
Mr. Farrell said the structure, built in the 1950s, needs understructure repair. The proposal would retain the building's overall Cape Cod style (grey cedar shingles and white trim), keep the width at 50 feet and increase the depth to 30 feet from the existing 26 feet to accommodate a larger bathroom and improve the interior layout. Upgraded windows will match the existing appearance; outside window trim will be a wood-composite exterior trim.
Because the building is close to the water, Mr. Farrell said the work will not include a full poured foundation. Instead, a combination of steel beams and concrete will be used to improve resistance to a 100-year storm surge. He told the commission the intent is to start the project in September and that he will submit a formal application to the HDC for review.
The commission agreed Mr. Farrell should file the application so the HDC can perform a formal review under its preservation and design guidelines.
