Historic District Commission approves trial relocation of 30-mph signs on Washington Road
Summary
The Town of Rye Historic District Commission on Jan. 14 approved a trial relocation of 30-mph speed-limit signs on Washington Road, asking the DPW to place them in the district and review effectiveness after six months. The vote was 7-1 in favor.
Chair Kaitlyn Coffey said at the Jan. 14 meeting that the commission would consider a request to allow relocation of speed-limit signage.
Alternate Katharine Brown explained a petition filed in August asking the Select Board and DPW to place 30-mph signs on the straightaway of Washington Road between Central and Wallis Roads so motorists would see them approaching the junior high and church locations. She said the signs installed earlier did not match that placement request.
DPW Director Jason Rucker told the commission he was willing to move the signs to the locations Brown described but had asked that the Historic District Commission review and approve the proposal first. After discussion about the most effective placements, the commission voted to allow the signs to be moved into the Historic District on a trial basis and to revisit the decision in six months to evaluate whether the change reduced speeding.
The vote was recorded as follows: Stacey Smith — "Yes, with the placement of the signs as presented by Katharine Brown"; Bob McGrath — Yes; John Moynahan — No; David Choate — Yes (with the understanding it could be temporary if ineffective); Kaitlyn Coffey — Yes; James Tegeder — Yes; Michael Scott — Yes (provided it's the best place); Karen Stewart — Yes. Alternate Katharine Brown agreed to follow up with Director Rucker to notify him of the HDC's trial approval.
The commission asked for a six-month follow-up to determine whether moving the signs affected speeds in the district. No formal mover/second was recorded in the minutes.
