The Birmingham Township Recreation, Parks and Open Space Committee agreed April 20 to seek $42,000 from the DCED Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP) to replace the fence at Birmingham Hill. Chairman Brian Bonkoski reported he contacted three fence companies and received two comparable informal quotes to establish a reasonable project cost for the grant request.
The committee discussed guidance from DCED and the township solicitor that it is reasonable to include an additional percentage in the request to account for projected 2027 cost increases, and the committee agreed to request $42,000 in total. The township will be responsible for a 15% local match of $6,300; that match must be approved by the Board of Supervisors at its May 4 meeting. Bonkoski said he will provide a summary to the Board because he cannot attend that meeting. The committee will review the grant application at the next RPOS meeting prior to submission. The DCED GTRP application deadline is May 31, 2026.
Two informal quotes were recorded: J&A Fence at $38,500 and Fence Authority at $39,910; Hoff Fence did not respond. Committee members noted that formal bidding will be required if the grant is awarded and that contractors indicated they would try to remain close to current pricing.
Next steps: the Board of Supervisors must approve the 15% match on May 4, the RPOS committee will review the final grant application at its May 18 meeting, and the application must be submitted by the May 31 deadline.
