Bangor council staff outlines proposed budget timeline; first readings scheduled and May–June work sessions set

A staff member told the Bangor City Council workshop that the city manager’s proposed budget is a starting point and that councilors will have opportunities to amend the plan before final adoption.

Staff said first readings of the proposed budget items are on tonight’s agenda and that the public hearing on the budget will take place at the June 22 meeting. The staff member also said staff is preparing a memo responding to council questions and that city assessor Phil Drew will provide an update on the ongoing reassessment at the meeting.

The workshop previewed upcoming discussions, including a department-by-department approach to the capital budget and separate sessions to consider new positions. The staff member noted proposed additions for public safety and emergency services, including four or eight new firefighter positions, consideration of an emergency-management position, and discussion of a potential downtown police officer.

Councilors asked that the budget process be briefly explained during the council meeting so the public understands that first readings are for discussion and are not final votes. Staff agreed to offer that explanation at the appropriate point in the meeting.

Staff said it expects to return with an updated proposal after council feedback and that any amendments will be reflected by substitution at the second reading scheduled for June 22.
