Board members raised concerns about the Bobby Jones Golf Course's recent finances and development choices during the Feb. 19 meeting, and the board reserved time at the next meeting for a full financial report.
Leo Fitzgerald told the board he would defer a detailed report until the next meeting but flagged a recent $1.4 million payment charged against the golf course that contrasted with earlier expectations of $1.1 million: "There was a $1,400,000 payment charged against the golf course... My as I recall it, it was supposed to be $1,100,000," he said, adding that his initial review suggested a roughly $300,000 deficit relative to prior estimates. Fitzgerald described the course's important environmental role during storms, noting that the course helped hold back water during a prior hurricane event.
Fitzgerald also reiterated the board's recommendation in favor of a one-story clubhouse, arguing operating costs—not just construction costs—should drive the decision. He said that while commissioners' votes shifted between readings, the board remains concerned about higher ongoing costs for a two-story facility and prefers a one-story design for long-term operational savings.
Why it matters: the golf course is a major city facility with both recreational and environmental functions; significant unplanned charges or long-term operating costs for new buildings could affect the city's budget and future maintenance obligations.
Next steps: Fitzgerald reserved time to return with a comprehensive Bobby Jones financial report at the board's March meeting to clarify the numbers and outstanding questions.
