Parks board elects Carl Shelfstahl chair; Leo Fitzgerald named vice chair

Carl Shelfstahl was elected chair of the Sarasota City Parks, Recreation and Environmental Protection Board on Feb. 19, the board announced after a voice nomination and unanimous acclamation.
Ron Watts moved to nominate Carl Shelfstahl for chair; the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor by voice. After the vote, outgoing Chair Leo Fitzgerald congratulated Shelfstahl, who told members, "Thank you for everybody for for having supported me." The board also named Leo Fitzgerald vice chair by acclamation following a seconded nomination.
The chair transition follows Fitzgerald's remark that he had served two terms as chair and would not seek commission approval to continue: "As chairman, I've had 2 2 years, 2 terms, and, that is my limit," he said at the meeting. Shelfstahl said he intends to engage commissioners and the incoming city manager on priorities including advancing a proposed park district.
Why it matters: leadership changes set the board's tone for the coming year and affect how priorities are advanced to the City Commission and staff. Shelfstahl signaled an interest in pursuing items the board has previously discussed with city leadership.
Procedural notes: The board also moved to approve the minutes of the Jan. 22 meeting; the motion was made, seconded and approved with all members voting 'Aye' during the meeting.
