Neighborhood Council 1 to collect traffic speed data, plans radar gun and video documentation

Art Taft reported that Neighborhood Council 1's Ad Hoc Traffic Safety Committee met with Captain Otto and Al Rollo and intends to purchase a radar gun to document speeding at local trouble spots rather than to issue citations.
Taft said the committee will videotape traffic and record radar speeds at identified hotspots — Flood Road, Fox Farm Road, Marketplace Road and the Country Club Boulevard/10th Avenue South freeway ramp — and that the Great Falls Police Department has agreed to accept the data. "We're going to videotape the action as well as record the radar event speed, which GFPD agreed to accept," Taft said.
Taft said the radar device and the model chosen have GFPD approval and that recorded data will be used to build a baseline report of traffic behavior to present to city and county partners. He emphasized that the intent is documentation and community safety, not automated citation: GFPD officers retain discretion to allow speeds up to 10 mph over posted limits outside school zones and enforcement resources are limited.
Taft also said the group will coordinate with Montana Highway Patrol and county sheriff deputies where jurisdiction overlaps and that the committee hopes to compile and present data by the end of summer.
