The Bandon School District board provisionally approved a set of qualifications for an interim superintendent and accepted a search calendar presented by an Oregon School Boards Association consultant, authorizing the chair to make substantive changes based on public input through June 9.
Vince Adams of OSBA led the public hearing required before executive session and walked the board through a draft position announcement and calendar. Adams said the application portal was already open and that OSBA’s communications team would distribute the announcement across Western States in the coming days.
Board members added language to emphasize effective communication and measurable outcomes. As one board member suggested, the qualifications now include the language "keeping parents, staff, and the school board informed through clear, consistent, empathetic messaging." The board also agreed to move "committed to serving all kids by putting students first in all decisions" toward the top of the qualifications.
On compensation, district finance staff noted the adopted 2026–27 budget contains $165,799 for superintendent compensation. OSBA presented comparative data and recommended announcing a pay range approximately between $155,000 and $165,000; board members signaled agreement to advertise roughly that range and also asked the announcement to state the board would consider less-than-1.0 FTE appointments (for example, 0.75 FTE) to broaden candidate interest. Adams said the board must approve the calendar and the qualifications to allow the district to proceed toward executive session consideration of candidates.
The board moved, seconded and unanimously voted to provisionally approve the qualifications as amended and to authorize the chair to finalize any substantive edits after community input by June 9, 2026. OSBA will finalize the flyer and post the position announcement after the board’s sign-off.
What’s next: OSBA will post the announcement and begin collecting applications, with the board expecting to begin candidate review and interviews on the calendar presented.
