The Downtown Improvement District voted to proceed toward awarding its Fresh Fridays public-realm activation grant to NexMark, following a presentation from NexMark leadership that highlighted attendance and social-media metrics. JT Grano, NexMark's president, told the board Fresh Fridays averages "2 to 5,000 people per event," cited zero reported policing or alcohol incidents over five years, and described digital engagement metrics NexMark says drive downtown visitation.
After questions from board members about sponsorships, revenue-tracking, and vendor reporting, and spirited discussion about whether street closures and event timing help or hurt retailers, the board voted 4–1 to direct staff to prepare the grant agreement for Fresh Fridays to NexMark. The dissenting board member expressed a preference to allocate funds to more direct streetscape investments (flowers/lighting) and raised concerns that extended street closures reduce access for some retailers.
In related action, the board also voted to direct staff to prepare grant agreements for NexMark to run the "Light Up the Night" tree-lighting activation and the Black Friday/Shop Small Saturday activation; both motions were seconded and approved by voice votes.
What the board heard: Grano described the Fresh Fridays goals as creating community gatherings, boosting local business, and showcasing downtown. He cited use-of-data from vendor reports and Placer.ai metrics and told the board the series draws significant third-party attention—he said representatives from the city of Ocala visited to learn from Fresh Fridays operations.
Dissent and board concern: Some board members, speaking from the retail perspective, said that repeated street closures can reduce customer access and that the board should ensure event economics clearly support downtown merchants; others said the events bring visitors who shop and dine downtown.
Next steps: Staff will prepare the Fresh Fridays grant agreement based on the NexMark proposal for board review at a future meeting. Staff will also prepare the Light Up the Night and Black Friday grant agreements for the board's review.
