Resident urges removal of city noise-exemption for schools after repeated loud events

Steven Martinucci, a nearby resident, used public comment at the convocation to ask local officials to address what he described as prolonged excessive noise from Sarasota High School and to remove the schools' exemption from the City of Sarasota noise ordinance.
Martinucci told the assembled school board members, commissioners and municipal leaders that he had circulated a petition signed by more than 100 surrounding residents and that problems — including loud stadium PA announcements, batting-cage noise and band rehearsals starting as early as 6:30 a.m. — have persisted for more than four years. "This blatant disregard for the residents, is quite honestly not acceptable," Martinucci said.
He said neighborhood associations have repeatedly raised concerns, that the principal has characterized Martinucci as a lone complainer and that residents feel ignored. Martinucci asked officials to remove the noise-exemption clause that he said currently shields schools within city limits from enforcement under the City of Sarasota ordinance.
The chair thanked him for his testimony and said the board would take note; no formal board action or vote was announced at the meeting.
