Assessors flag parcel-numbering errors in subdivision filings; county staff to adjust review process

County assessors and the recorder alerted commissioners to a recurring problem in subdivision filings: noncontiguous lots have been given the same parcel number after splits, creating tax and recordkeeping inconsistencies.
Chief Deputy Assessor Ginger Johnson and Deputy Assessor Cheryl Fabrizio said they have seen parcels split and then assigned identical parcel numbers even when lots are not adjoining. Recorder Shelley Brennan described the recording process and the steps staff currently take when reviewing plats. Assistant Community Development Director Mike Gottfredson said the subdivision ordinance does not prohibit the current practice but staff discussed adding procedural checks to ensure new parcel numbers are assigned when parcels are not contiguous.
Commissioners asked staff to coordinate between the Recorder's Office, Assessor and Community Development to prevent future misnumbering and to ensure taxes and ownership records remain accurate. No formal ordinance change was proposed during the meeting; staff advised that process adjustments would be pursued.
