Council members on Monday signaled support for exploring changes to compensation and vehicle usage for the mayor and council and discussed whether to combine unused scholarship funds to expand a discretionary grants pot.
Council Member Blunt argued the mayor’s role carries heavier duties and merited examining compensation adjustments for future councils. Town staff noted charter rules that any changes to compensation take effect for the next election cycle and that personnel‑manual changes (a 2019 resolution) instead of a charter amendment could restore vehicle privileges previously limited by the council.
Town Administrator Wood said he will bring numbers showing options and fiscal impacts at a future meeting. On grants, staff reported nine applicants for discretionary grants (up to $2,000 each) and five $1,000 scholarships; three scholarship applicants did not meet eligibility requirements. The council discussed aggregating the unawarded scholarship funds to increase the grant pot to $15,000 to fund more applicants and decided to appropriate the money and finalize awards in July.
No binding changes to compensation or vehicle policy were adopted Monday; staff will draft a resolution on vehicle policy and return with financial scenarios and a proposed timeline.
