High-school coach pitches convertible tennis–pickleball complex to county

Scott Mickey, South Walton High School tennis coach, asked county leaders to partner with the school board to build a facility that could host tournaments and be convertible to pickleball courts.
“Ten tennis courts easily convert to 20 pickleball courts,” Mickey (S13) said, arguing that tournament revenue could underwrite operations and that the county and school district should coordinate. He said the school district had identified land and requested county participation in planning and funding.
The coach said properly managed courts — lighted, with bathrooms and an office — could host higher-level tournaments and produce enough revenue to sustain operations. He noted many county recreation departments use joint facilities and urged the county to consider the tourism and programmatic benefits.
Staff acknowledged the proposal and the presence of school representatives and said the county would consider coordination as it refines its prioritized list of projects. No formal agreement was made at the meeting.
