Tama County supervisors approve festival and time capsule, clear claims and routine motions

The Tama County Board of Supervisors on June 1 unanimously approved a series of routine motions, including permission for the Tama-Toledo Chamber to use the courthouse lawn for the Stop Light Festival and placement of a time capsule during that event.

The board approved the agenda on a motion by Supervisor David Turner, seconded by Supervisor Curt Kupka. Supervisors then approved the minutes of the May 26 regular meeting on a motion by Supervisor Curt Hilmer, seconded by Supervisor Heather Knebel.

The board approved health fund claims totaling $1,455.40 (motion by Turner; seconded by Kupka) and general claims totaling $339,610.90 (motion by Turner; seconded by Hilmer). The minutes note claims were higher that week because of the board’s quarterly payment to 911. All of the motions noted above passed on unanimous votes recorded as “all voted aye.”

The Tama-Toledo Chamber’s request to use the courthouse lawn for the annual Stop Light Festival on Friday, July 10, 2026, was approved on a motion by Kupka, seconded by Turner. Mayor Brian Sokol of the City of Toledo later received approval to place a time capsule on the courthouse lawn to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary; that motion (moved by Turner and seconded by Knebel) also passed unanimously.

Other routine procedural items handled during the meeting included changing the date of the next regular meeting to June 8, 2026, to avoid conflict with the Primary Election Canvass and a scheduled public hearing on a budget amendment.
