During the second-reading vote the committee accepted sections J–L 'in form' for posting as current policy. Committee members praised the multi-year effort to update the full policy manual and said the changes align district policy with current legal and best-practice standards.
Assistant Superintendent Vicky Seldana summarized key points in the first-read materials: updates to student absence and excuse rules to conform with Massachusetts compulsory attendance law (including a process to withdraw students absent 15 or more school days), a required letter to families after five consecutive unexcused days to invite collaborative support rather than punishment, and clearer alignment of visitor access protocols with DESE guidance (including sign-in systems and the use of Raptor ID to screen visitors).
Seldana also outlined revisions to student-records handling, including clarifications on what may be legally released and procedures for responding to subpoenas or law-enforcement requests. The home-and-hospital tutorial policy received minor edits to remove an individual name and refer instead to a position; homeschooling approvals were centralized to the central office with progress-report monitoring and plans for 2026–27 due before the first day of school.
Committee members asked clarifying questions about specific language (for example, whether the 15-day withdrawal applies to consecutive days) and requested that the changes be communicated to families ahead of the fall implementation. No final votes were taken on the first-read policies; members were advised they will return for second readings and formal adoption later in the year.
