The Orleans Agricultural Advisory Council voted to skip its scheduled July 13 meeting and reconvene on Monday, Aug. 10, and named Peter Jensen interim chair to coordinate recruitment and communication with the select board and the conservation commission.
Alex Bates moved the motion to skip July, and members seconded and voiced assent; the meeting record shows verbal approval but does not provide a roll-call tally. "I'll make a motion to skip the July 13th meeting and the council would then reconvene on Monday, August 10th," Alex Bates said during the motion. The motion included a directive that Peter Jensen serve as interim chair to help coordinate outreach to the select board and conservation commission.
The vote capped an extended discussion about membership and quorum. Members said the council has struggled to maintain a full roster and often lacks the human capital needed for regular work. One member said they planned to step down to avoid burnout; members described statutory membership expectations (five regular members and up to two associates) and acknowledged that select-board approval is required for reappointments and leadership roles.
Council members agreed to recruit Orleans-based growers, market vendors and other community members over the summer so the body can return with a fuller slate of members in August. The council also discussed temporarily skipping July given the busy growing season and two members’ planned absences.
Other procedural items resolved at the meeting included approval of April minutes with a correction to the public-work day date (May 9, not March 9) and the adjournment of the meeting.
The council will reconvene Aug. 10, with Peter Jensen acting as interim chair while the select board reviews any formal reappointments. The transcript records verbal assent to the motions but does not include precise vote tallies.
