Members of the Willington Conservation Commission discussed a proposed reroute of the Nip Much Trail during their June 4, 2026 special meeting after a conversation with Claire Cain, trail director for the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association (CFPA).
Claire Cain told commissioners she would consult her committee about routing. CFPA’s main rationale for the riverside section is to extend the trail alongside the river for a longer stretch. Commissioners raised conservation concerns that adding new trail segments can fragment habitat and asked whether CFPA could instead route users onto existing trails — the Talmadge Spur and the Split Rock Trail — to reduce ecological impact. Cain said she would bring those concerns back to CFPA’s committee for consideration.
Commissioners framed the matter as a coordination question rather than a formal decision at the special meeting; they noted the commission cannot add new agenda items during a special meeting and will revisit the topic at a regular meeting when CFPA provides an update. The commission also flagged that when the Deep Forest Resiliency Grant RFP comes out they will review it and formally decide whether to pursue funding for related projects.
The conversation highlighted a difference of emphasis: CFPA’s committee prioritizes a longer riverside user experience, while the town commission prioritized minimizing potential fragmentation. Claire Cain agreed to follow up with her committee and report back to the commission.
