Committee to refresh 'Bikes Do Not Enter' marking at Circuit Avenue; chief clarifies sidewalk rules

Oak Bluffs—The town’s Roads and Byways Committee discussed bicycle traffic at Circuit Avenue on April 10 and agreed no policy change was needed; instead the Highway Department will refresh existing pavement markings that indicate bikes should not enter the far end of Circuit Avenue.
Chief Searle clarified the applicable practice: walking a bicycle on the sidewalk is permitted, but riding bicycles on sidewalks is banned within business districts and cyclists must follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles. Highway Superintendent Richard Combra said the department has crosswalk repainting scheduled elsewhere in town and can refresh the Circuit Avenue “Bikes Do Not Enter” marking at that time. The committee did not take a vote to change signage or pavement rules; Combra described the repainting as a timing/operations decision by the Highway Department.
No enforcement actions or new bylaws were proposed at the meeting; committee action items record that the Highway Department will refresh the signage and markings when crews are repainting crosswalks.
