Oak Bluffs—The town’s Roads and Byways Committee voted April 10 to recommend that the Select Board approve a reconfiguration of parking at 7 Circuit Ave Ext., a move the committee said is intended to improve pedestrian and traffic safety during the summer season.
Meeting participant Mark Wallace presented the proposal, saying the current mix of large delivery vehicles, buses, bicycles, mopeds and pedestrians creates a hazardous situation when vehicles back into traffic. Wallace proposed eliminating six diagonal spaces and converting them to five parallel spaces, creating a continuous painted sidewalk from Oak Bluffs Avenue down to Pasque Avenue, and adding a crosswalk to improve access to the harborside. Wallace said the change would widen the roadway by nearly 2.5 feet and recommended adjusting the posted time limit in front of 6 Circuit Ave Ext. from 15 minutes to one hour while keeping 15‑minute spaces nearer Oak Bluffs Avenue.
Chief Searle supported the safety rationale and the changes as “a good start forward to make the area safer particularly in the summer months,” the committee recorded. Highway Superintendent Richard Combra abstained from the committee vote, stating a business interest in the area. Chair Mark Leonard and Planning Board Representative Erik Albert voted in favor.
Chief Searle moved the recommendation to the Select Board and Albert seconded. Roll call vote: Leonard — Aye; Combra — Abstain; Chief Searle — Aye; Albert — Aye (3 Aye, 1 Abstain). The committee recorded no amendment to the proposal; Chair Leonard will present the parking reconfiguration plan to the Select Board as the next procedural step.
The committee also discussed repainting pavement markings and installing a marked crosswalk; implementation details and final signage will be determined by the Select Board and town departments if the board endorses the recommendation.
