Muskegon County activates Emergency Operations Center as flooding forces river access and road closures

Muskegon County activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in response to regional flooding and heavy rain, county staff reported.
Sarah Cooper (county emergency management/public information lead, speaker 22) told the board the EOC was activated to centralize information and coordinate response across departments, municipalities and partner agencies. Cooper said priority actions are ensuring public safety, sharing accurate information, identifying unmet needs and maintaining situational awareness.
"All dams are functioning as intended at this time and are currently being closely monitored for safety," Cooper said. She added that all public river access sites along the Muskegon River are closed and several roads are closed; residents should not attempt to drive through flooded roads or move barricades and should follow updates on the Muskegon County Emergency Management and Road Commission pages.
Cooper said the EOC will issue public information as conditions change and that the county will provide a summary after deactivation describing actions taken and lessons learned. The county asked the public to use official county channels for Muskegon County updates and to consult neighboring-county pages for conditions outside the county.
