Public commenter alleges ethics-screening noncompliance; committee agrees to add comptroller letter to packet

A public commenter told the Wilson County steering committee that a 2023 letter from the comptroller concluded the county’s ethics screening committee was not in compliance with the law and criticized the county attorney for serving as a voting member of that committee.

The commenter said, “Here, 3 years later, your county attorney is a voting member. That's the problem I have with transparency,” and urged a fair, level playing field and an end to closed-door meetings. The speaker asked that the comptroller’s letter be reviewed by the committee.

A staff member offered to reproduce the document for committee members and proposed placing it on the agenda and in the meeting packet for next month. A committee motion to include the comptroller letter in the next month’s packet was seconded by Mr. McCollum, committee member, and approved by voice vote. The committee’s action was limited to adding the document to committee materials for review; no formal finding, investigation, or change of committee membership was recorded at the meeting.

The steering committee did not resolve the underlying allegation that the ethics screening committee was out of compliance with the law; the meeting record shows only the public comment and the committee’s agreement to place the comptroller letter in the next packet for members to review. The committee did not produce a timeline or set a follow-up investigation or hearing date on the record.
