The Skagit County Board of Commissioners unanimously proclaimed May 17–23, 2026 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week during a brief session on May 18, praising local EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, dispatchers and volunteers for their role in emergency response.
"We have a countywide coordinated EMS system," said Josh, an EMS representative who briefed the board, noting the importance of collaboration among dispatchers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics and other emergency personnel. He thanked the community for supporting the county EMS levy that helps fund the system.
Commissioners offered personal anecdotes and expressions of gratitude. One commissioner recalled a relative who survived a severe injury because of prompt care, and another described how response times and prehospital care have improved dramatically. The board read and signed a proclamation noting the national EMS Week observance and the value of emergency medical services.
The proclamation text read in part that access to quality emergency care “dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate” of people who experience sudden illness or injury and recognized thousands of hours of specialized training by EMS personnel. The board moved and approved the proclamation at the reconvened 2:00 p.m. session.
The county did not announce new funding actions at the session; commissioners used the proclamation to acknowledge existing EMS resources and the contributions of paid and volunteer responders.
