County reviews ambulance options as contract ends; board considers making EMS an essential service

Audubon County officials on June 18 discussed options for ambulance coverage after the county’s existing contract expires on June 30.
EMA Director Tyler Thygesen told the board that Stuart, Iowa ambulance services sought compensation beyond what Audubon could budget. As an interim option, the county discussed contracting with a service based in Des Moines that would transport critical patients to Des Moines, though no contract or proposed price had been presented to the board at the meeting. Thygesen said the county attorney will need to be consulted about early steps to declare emergency medical services an essential service.
Thygesen said the first steps toward making EMS essential would be adopting a resolution and forming an advisory board, and that he wanted each city in the county included in those discussions. The board did not take formal action on EMS at the June 18 meeting; staff were directed to consult the county attorney and continue discussions.
