Taylor board approves budget, field lease, insurance and a tentative principals’ pact; TPA deal passes 5–1

At its May 20 meeting, the Taylor School District Board of Education approved several operational and financial items affecting district administration and community partnerships.
The board approved the Wayne RESA 2026–27 General Fund Operating Budget Resolution on a 6–0 vote. Trustees also approved a three-year lease allowing the Taylor Seahawks Little League Football organization to use the Kennedy football field (13505 Kennedy Dr.) beginning July 2, 2026 through June 30, 2029; the lease sets annual rent, maintenance responsibilities, scheduling procedures and insurance requirements. During public comment, community members asked about field access, maintenance and bathroom access; district staff explained the Seahawks handle mowing and upkeep while the district handles striping and port-a-johns will be used for restroom access.
The board adopted Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) membership for Aug. 1, 2026–July 31, 2027 and approved an insurance package through SET SEG for fiscal year 2026–27 at a presented cost of $376,430; staff noted the district expected cost savings compared with the prior provider.
Trustees approved Superintendent Michael Wegher’s overnight conference requests for MASA (Sept. 22–25, 2026, Acme, MI) and AASA (Feb. 24–27, 2027, Atlanta, GA). The board also approved routine consent-agenda items including minutes, payment of bills, personnel reports and field trips.
On labor matters, the board approved a tentative agreement with the Taylor Principals Association (effective July 1, 2026–June 30, 2029). The motion, moved by Linda Moore and supported by Kathie Fields, passed 5–1; Trustee Justin Mordarski cast the lone no vote.
The board tabled a proposed change to its 2026–27 meeting schedule to the June 3 meeting. The board then entered closed session at 8:17 PM under Section 8(c) of the Michigan Open Meetings Act and returned at 8:53 PM before adjourning at 8:53 PM.
What happens next: The district will execute lease documents with the Seahawks, finalize insurance procurement with SET SEG, and proceed with TPA contract implementation steps if ratified following any required ratification procedures.
