During the March 18 meeting the Taylor School District highlighted multiple non-action updates including a one-year Building Healthy Communities grant, a first reading of graduation-policy changes tied to a FAFSA Challenge grant and upcoming communications and construction events.
Scott Grant described a Building Healthy Communities grant coordinated with Wayne State University that provided recess equipment carts to each elementary school, educational resources such as daily activity messages and a $1,000 PE department gift card for each elementary to purchase equipment. Grant-funded staff incentives included gift cards for a district walking challenge; administration recommended continuing to leverage these resources and exploring partnerships with district wellness programs.
Superintendent Michael Wegher presented a first reading of proposed updates to graduation requirements intended to align district policy with the FAFSA Challenge grant and support FAFSA completion for students and families. A community member during public comment urged the district to host FAFSA family nights at multiple times to improve parent participation; administrators said follow-up opportunities and curriculum materials would be available at future meetings and via school principals.
Mr. Wegher also announced an athletic fields groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for March 26 at the stadium bleachers/track and said the district planned to mail postcards to registered voters with bond and athletic-field updates by the end of the week. Trustee Justin Mordarski raised a timing concern about sending district mailings near the school-board election period and suggested considering an August–November blackout period for non-election administrative mailings to avoid perceived interference.
Administration noted an expected state infrastructure grant application next week to pursue funding for roofs and parking-lot repairs. The board scheduled items for its April 8 meeting and adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
The district did not vote on the graduation-policy revisions at this meeting; the policy was presented as a first reading.
