Mukilteo youth advisory committee reviews year of civic projects and asks for more council access

"Our mission this year was to create a more inclusive Mukilteo by encouraging the community to look at it through a youth lens," co‑chair Nina Huang said.
Committee members listed monthly work: leadership elections and headshots, meetings with city staff (planning, public works, police and parks), a municipal code review project, an Earth Day park cleanup and a mental‑health program pilot coordinated with local schools. Secretary Maya Sheff thanked city staff for Q&A sessions that helped students learn how local government works.
Council members praised the group’s attendance and engagement. Council leadership said they will consider formalizing youth access: one council member announced a planned July or August work session to discuss a non‑voting liaison seat so youth can participate in council work sessions and meetings without voting authority. "That is a huge deal, to have a voice from the youth during our council meetings," a council speaker said.
The presentation closed with coffee and a group photo; the council thanked the students for their work and encouraged continued participation. No formal vote or ordinance followed; staff will return with options for a liaison role and the council may discuss next steps at a future meeting.
