Broward outlines "redefining schools" review; board presses for faster, deeper community engagement

The superintendent's office presented a two-track plan on Aug. 27 to "redefine" schools: a district-wide programmatic review of magnet, choice and CTE offerings, and a facilities repurposing track that would evaluate specific schools for consolidation, repurposing or closure when they meet one or more thresholds (facility condition, operational cost, or sustained under-enrollment). "We will look at all schools and scale the programs that are working while addressing schools that have persistent under-enrollment," said the superintendent's chief of strategy.
Staff proposed a compressed engagement timeline: municipal briefings in mid-September, a board workshop in mid-September to review policy amendments (school choice and boundary policies) and clustered community discussions across September and October. Some board members and many public commenters urged an expanded, multi-week program of local roundtables and signed-up forums so families and school advisory councils could respond with detailed input before final recommendations are returned to the board.
Several board members suggested a two-stage approach: (1) publish a preliminary short list of candidate schools for focused engagement, so communities know whether they are directly affected, and (2) conduct intensive, small-group deliberations with municipal leaders, local EABs and school councils before any boundary or closure votes. Board counsel confirmed that while policy language guides the boundary process, the board can identify schools for future action; formal closures would follow a statutory and board-approved timeline.
What happens next: staff said policy language on school choice and boundaries will be returned to the board at the Sept. 10 meeting for possible amendment and that the district will schedule municipal and cluster-level community engagements through October. Staff also plans programmatic analyses of magnet/choice and CTE offerings and a district facilities assessment to complete by early 2026.
